 KATTY MCMURRAY

‘Katty’s landscapes and seascapes are deceptively simple and serenely evocative’ – ‘Cool blue-greys and earthy shades infuse her work, even close to home she gives a fresh perspective’ – ‘The Latest’, Brighton

Katty McMurray has been painting and exhibiting  for over 20 years, her paintings stem from her love of drawing, hundreds of sketches done on location are used as a basis for her paintings, these simple line drawings form the composition of her paintings… the spontaneity of these drawings are what makes Katty’s paintings unique.

Different times in life have provided different inspirations…. The early years were spent travelling and sketching far away places… Morocco, Zanzibar, China, Vietnam, various parts of Europe….  Her attention then moved to the UK, in particular the Cornish coastline… here she found a tranquillity which can be seen in much of her more recent work – ever present are the clean lines and a pleasing gentle palate that followers of her work recognise.

In her most recent body of work Katty has begun to incorporate everyday objects - a cup, a pot, a vase of flowers, a scene at the breakfast table, markets and gathering places with wares for sale. The results are charming and reflect just how much she enjoys painting as a whole, from the initial  sketches to the final works in oil… albeit the normal, the domestic and the everyday, or distant places with exciting new experiences.

Katty spent most of her childhood constantly drawing and at sixteen went to the Epsom School of Art, then on to the Chelsea School of art in 1998. Since graduating she has exhibited widely in London and around the country with Galleries such as Ingo Fincke gallery, London, Cambridge Contemporary Art, lena Boyle Fine Art, London The Curwen Gallery, London and Gallerina in Darlington.
She has had15 sell out solo exhibitions and countless mixed shows. She exhibits at all the major London Art Fairs and has had various high profile commissions including the Hoxton Hotel and Great Ormond Street Hospital, and published over 50 hand made original screen prints with Artizan Editions.

She has also had cards published by the Art Group and The Cannes Down Press.

In 1999 she was selected to be the Brighton Festival Poster artist and has been commissioned for a painting on the Cunard Cruise Liner the ‘Queen Victoria’, and a series of 10 paintings for ‘Harbour Way’ apartments by Taylor Woodrow for Bryant Homes.

In 2006 she was commissioned to draw a series of London Landmarks to be reproduced over 200 times on a scale of 3 metres each for ‘The Hoxton Hotel’ in London.

Great Ormond Street Hospital bought two collections of Katty’s paintings, they now have over 25 works on display, and the Royal Sussex Neo- natal unit have purchased a collection of her hand made silk screen prints.

Katty lives in Brighton with her family.
